Michelle Basham

Describe the philosophy you bring to your work:

I bring over 30 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit and public sector with substantial experience in helping struggling organizations transform for growth. I was the Founder/Executive Director of Avenues for Youth, FamilyWise, and the Bridge for Youth. In addition, I served as the CEO/President for the YWCA of Delaware and YWCA of Minneapolis and as the interim Executive Director for YouthLink. My experience ranges from human services, to homelessness, to housing and work related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. When I approach organizations, I work to elevate their strengths and fearlessly address the challenges they are facing in their organizational structure, culture, business model, market shifts, and financial drivers. I help organizations push for greatness.

How do you use your skills to help our clients?

I have led and consulted with dozens of organizations providing leadership, strategic planning, coaching, policy development, and exploring mergers. I understand an organization’s true costs and financial model in order to transform financially struggling nonprofits. I recognize market shifts, downturns, and also where hidden opportunities exist despite external challenges.

Educational background/achievements:

I earned a B.A. in communications and organizational psychology, a master’s in Public Administration, and a Juris Doctorate (bar admission October 2004.) In addition, I completed a fellowship at the Humphrey Institute Public Policy Forum where I did my group work on women and people of color in political leadership.

Board service:

I serve on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of the American Constitution Society. In the past, I served on the executive committee for the United Way Council of Agency Executives.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am very passionate about animal rescue and being a pet parent. My husband and I have two rescue dogs, two rescue cats, and for almost 10 years, I have been a foster for a no-kill rescue organization. Over the years, we have fostered almost 30 kittens and cats.
