The Summer Check-In: Assessing Organizational Readiness Before Fall

  • Aug 3
  • 2 min read

Summer often brings a natural pause for nonprofit organizations. Programs may shift schedules, staff may take well-earned time off, and the pace can feel a little slower. But this season also creates a valuable opportunity: a chance to step back, assess past performance and organizational health, and prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Before the busy fall season begins, is your organization ready for what comes next?

1. Revisit Your Strategic Priorities

Fall often brings renewed activity—new initiatives, fundraising efforts, board engagement, and community partnerships. Before launching into the next season, take time to evaluate your priorities.

Ask:

  • Are we still focused on the goals that matter most?

  • Have external circumstances changed since we created our strategic or sustainability plan?

  • Are our resources aligned with our highest-impact work?

  • A summer check-in can help ensure your organization is moving forward intentionally rather than simply responding to what comes up.

2. Assess Your Team’s Capacity

Many nonprofits operate with small teams (or individuals) balancing multiple responsibilities. Does your staff have the support and clarity they need?

Reflect on:

  • Where are we stretched too thin?

  • Are roles and responsibilities clear?

  • What work could be streamlined, delegated, or paused?

Organizational readiness is not just about having a plan—it is about having the capacity to carry it out.

3. Strengthen Board Engagement

Fall often means more activity for boards including fundraising, planning, and strengthening community connections. Use the summer months to reconnect with your Board and ensure everyone understands the organization’s current priorities.

Consider:

  • Does the Board have a shared understanding of our challenges and opportunities?

  • Are Board members equipped to serve as ambassadors of our mission?

  • Are we engaging Board members in meaningful ways?

  • Strong organizations are built through alignment between staff and Board leadership.

4. Review Your Story and Communications

Your organization’s story is one of your greatest assets. Before fall outreach begins, evaluate how clearly you are communicating your mission, impact, and value.

Ask:

  • Can our audiences quickly understand what we do and why it matters?

  • Are we sharing the voices and experiences of the communities we serve?

  • Are our communications aligned with our goals?

Clear communication builds trust—with donors, partners, volunteers, and the broader community.

5. Prepare for the Unexpected

Readiness also means building resilience. Consider what challenges could arise and where your organization may need additional support.

A summer check-in is an opportunity to identify gaps, strengthen systems, and make thoughtful decisions before urgency takes over.

At Strategic Consulting & Coaching, we work alongside nonprofit leaders to strengthen strategy, leadership, communications, and organizational sustainability. Taking time to assess where you are today can help your organization enter the fall season with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose. Let’s get ready!
